Using the Report Message Add-In
When using the Report Message add-in in Outlook:
- Marking a message as Junk will move the email to your Junk folder, block the sender, and optionally allow you to report the message to Microsoft.
- Flagging a message as Phishing will also move it to Junk and automatically report it to Microsoft for investigation.
Why Reporting Matters
Email services like Microsoft 365 Exchange Online use filtering systems to scan all incoming messages for suspicious content — including specific words, patterns, and tones — to detect potentially harmful emails. These filters rely on flags, which represent known threats or suspicious traits. If an email contains enough warning signs or matches a known threat, it gets blocked before reaching your inbox.
Every time you report a malicious message, you help enhance these filters by adding new threat indicators or reinforcing existing ones. Your report plays a role in protecting not just yourself, but the wider community.
